Subject: new to linux need massive help

a freind of mine pointed me in the direction of linux so i downloaded ripped and installed an iso of ubuntu.
after installing i ran into a few problems first off i have it installed on one of 3 computers i own (all windows based) it is curently on a compaq 2176 (crapy i know) but for the time being untill i fully understand linux it will work.
im having issues installing things and runing apps. the packages unpack into 30-40 different files and none of wich will execute even though in the .tar.gz it has a txt file telling me to click on specific files after doing a few things. it tells me to extract to a new directory and do something called a "make file" whatever this may be.
i need to install an ati radeon graffics driver the touchpad driver and my audio driver. among these items i need to install wine tools as well as the driver and software for a windows based wireless card adapter.
the name and make of the adapter is as follows: WPC54G ver.3 wireless g notebook adapter from linksys if anyone can give me information on how to install these drivers as well as give me a run down of ubuntu in general and how to operate it i would much appriciate it. i am officialy fed up with windows and its uncountable amount of crashes and issues on top of the fact that you have to pay for the simplest things and the windows tech group isnt much help at all. hopefully with some help i will have ubuntu down and be much happier with it.
if you need more information or want to ask anything feel free and i will answer the best i can.

Hello Roz,

Welcome to the Linux world!

First off, let me give you one very important advise: forget how things get done in windows! In Linux you do stuff in a different way, not easier, nor more difficult, just different.

To install software, you usually don't go and download something from a website, but instead, you use the "Package Manager", a program that has a list of available software, you select what you want and it installs it for you.

Touchpad and sound should work out of the box, no need for extra driver. As for the graphics card, you may try to install "envyng-gtk", a tool that selects and configures the proper driver for your nVidia o ATI card. (See ubuntuguide, link below)

Read this, as it explains the different ways of installing software in Linux:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/linux-tutorials-howtos-reference-material/64958-how-install-software-linux.html

Also, as you are using Ubuntu, this will guide you trough the usual stuff:
http://ubuntuguide.org

Your wireless card may be a little problematic; the chipset is made by broadcom, broadcom wireless cards are a mixed bag in the default configuration of Ubuntu, some work properly, some don't, if it doesn't, you'll have to install a driver. I made a guide to install the newest broadcom (and other wireless cards) drivers in Ubuntu, but it is in spanish:

Well, the usual reason broadcom cards do not work is because you need a firmware for them, and the firmware extraction is a little complicated, but I have made it easier for people:

http://rgb.com.ni/glock24/files/b43legacy_firmware.tar
http://rgb.com.ni/glock24/files/b43_firmware.tar

Those files contain the firmware files. Download and copy them to your Ubuntu box. To unpack them, open up a terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and type this:

where path_to_files is the directory where you copied the two files.

Now, you to unload and reload the driver:

Now I need some info on what happened when you loaded the driver:

Copy the output of this command here.

Also, some info on your hardware:

And post the output here.

Rozz, what I told you to do made your wireless card work in the compaq? did you do something else?

Can you better describe your problem with the toshiba? Also, would be helpful to give us the exact model of the computer, eg. toshiba satellite a105-s4364 (you can usually find that in a label at the bottom).
