I run Ubuntu 8.04 Gnome on my IBM M-41 Desktop 1.8ghz,1 gig ram and it works pretty quick.

I also installed Ubuntu 8.04 Gnome on my Panasonic CF-48 1.6ghz, 512mb ram laptop and it runs faster than XP on my wifes IBM T-23 with the same specs .

I also run Mandriva KDE 2008 on my Amrel RT 686 EX 900mhz, 256mb ram laptop and it runs OK also.

Both my laptops also run wirelessly.

Mint Linux should also run well with your specs and comes with all codecs.

Also Mepis 7.0 is a good Distro to run that comes with all codecs.

Everything I have suggested I have either ran at one time or is installed at present on my computers.

Things that have run quickly and well on a Compaq nc6220 laptop with Pentium M 1.86 GHz processor and 1 GB ram.

PCLinuxOS Mini 2008 is pretty darn quick. It uses LXDE as a desktop environment, I believe.

Puppy Linux runs blazingly fast, but you'll make some sacrifices as far as eye candy and choice of applications.

I used to use Arch Linux with LXDE, which was pretty bloody quick, but of late I'm using Debian testing with XFCE. Not quite as quick, but still respectable. Faster than Windows ever was on my machine.

I haven't tried it, but Linux Mint just came out with a fluxbox community edition, which promises a combination of user friendliness and out of the box media capabilities, while keeping a pretty light memory footprint. But it's a release candidate so there might still be some bugs.

I'm running Kubuntu 8.04 on a much slower machine, and it seems an acceptable speed. You should try the newest Ubuntu (if you want to stick with Ubuntu) and see if that does better.

A few pieces of advice:

- sometimes what appears to be slowness can be caused by video driver issues.
- Some people think running an older version of a distro will be faster. Usually it's not, unless it's a *really* old version (like, 2.4 kernel instead of 2.6).
- You can get the most significant speed gains by switching to a low-footprint desktop environment (or window manager) like jwm, fluxbox, lxde, wmaker, etc. You lose some functionality, though.

DSL is a stripped down debian. Super fast. Takes a little getting used to. Comes with JWM, which looks like a clean windows 2000 desktop. And you can upgrade it to full debian, which is still fast. I use it on an old Pent.1 and it is way quicker than windows 2000 or any other linux distro. I can't imagine how fast it would be on a pent. 3!

I can recommend the following fast distributions :

Puppy Linux, very small and fast,
Muppy Linux builds on Puppy,
Both distributions are easy to handle and you can use them as a second OS on a flash drive for example.
Zenwalk is also fast and clearly.
They all run much faster than XP.

Xubuntu I tried also and it was not really fast.
