Subject: Ubuntu 8.0.4, Dell PowerEdge, and Sound

For a little over 3 weeks now I have lost the sound out of my Dell Poweredge. I have UBUNTU 8.0.4 fully patched, but still now sound. Now, if I boot the LIVECD, everything works fine, BUT, my installed distro can't seem to output anything. I have tried both the ALSA mixer, and the GNOME mixer, but still nothing works. I believe that the sound card is a SOUNDBLASTER with 5.1 surround, and I have verified that everything is connected correctly.

This happened suddenly and without warning and I can't seem to get it back. Does anyone have experience with sound on Ubuntu that can help?

So did you install any updated drivers for the audio? That might be the reason why audio no longer works?

I suggest you file a bug:

I haven't installed any new drivers (that I am aware of). I will file the bug report, but I am curious...how does the sound work in ubuntu? I mean, is there a configuration file that gets written that I can blow-away and have the system attempt to create a new one?
