I have come into possession of an old-school IBM ThinkPad with a Windows 95 OS. I have nothing to lose experimenting with this laptop. What is the best approach to installing a Linux OS?

Did it come with cdrom? Also you need to post how much cpu speed and ram and hardrive space to make a informed suggestion. Sounds like DSL or Puppy looks like a good choice but cant tell till you post more info.

Hello can I tag along on this thread - I have a IBM 600E 2645 58G 300 Mhz /288MB/^GB Disc Docking Station CD&FD

A Blank hard Disc - I have never had so many problems in all of my life - I have looked at the sound Issue yet - Ive never got that far - I cant get on to the Internet ( direct connect via Xircom PCMCIA RE100 card )

I have trued Ubuntu Xbuntu Mint Debian - I have had some joy from DSL & DSL-n - I hasve replaced the bios battery - but it still looses its memory the main battry is flat & wont charge - & I cannot get Internet access with the battery in or out - Debian is the worst I just end up with a Bash terminal.

I read so much about releasing memory for Linux to acpi=off pnpbios=off - that I am real confused as well as beeing a Linux nubie - fair on XP & DOS - responce from the other boards has been very sparce - any help here would be appreciated before I either bin it or reload XP
Many Thanks John C
