Subject: Video Card Recommendation
I'm a long time linux user and will be building myself a new system in the coming weeks. In the past, I've always purchased nvidia graphics hardware as it has always had the best driver support. However, I've recently read much about how ATI is opening up their specs to the open source community and I'd like to know whether I should stick with nvidia at this point or whether now is a good time to jump ship to ATI? What is the status of ATI drivers on new(ish) hardware? If you were building a new machine today, which company would you go with?

I'd certainly opt for ATI, yet not its latest generation of graphics cards yet. All cards from Radeon 9500 to Radeon X1950 are very, very well supported these days, offering some of the most compelling features with the free drivers that you can get when running Xorg. The newer cards, like the Radeon HD series, are also nearing that state of support, with the development of a new driver for thatgeneration of hardware, but it's not there yet at the moment.
If you don't need much graphics horsepower, Intel IGP is also worth considering. I'm very happy with my Intel GMA X3000 chip from about 1.5yrs ago. :)

Thanks for the input. I've been doing a bit more research and it does seem like ATI support has come a long way. I was particularly impressed to see that avivo is now supported with the catalyst drivers. Unfortunately, it looks like nvidia still has a leg up in a very significant way (at least with respect to the last generation cards, which is what I am looking to pick up).
