After some slightly bizarre happenings on my Fedora8 box I decided to look in the /tmp file immediately on user log-in. There were around fifty folders there, of which 27 were labelled keyring[..xyz..] Is this normal?

You don't normally have to worry about the /tmp directory. Many programs use it to create lock files.

What kind of bizarre behavior have you observed so far?

Thank you for your reply.

After trying to use Azureus to download the Fedora 9 iso, 12 hours later I could not find it on my system, just a desktop icon that attached to nothing, but did find an unknown .zip in a spare user account that I set up for any guests at home. There were some rather bizarre other files with it. This a/c had never been used by anyone at that stage. Unfortunately,I panicked a bit and deleted all of it, though in hindsight I could have put it onto a removable drive for future reference. I also changed all passwords for all accounts.

Did you get the ISO file or just the .torrent file? ISO files, wouldn't show up associated with any programs.

The unknown .zip is a matter for worry, of course. Have you observed anything else?

Sorry but time has erased my recollections of exactly what happened. I suppose I didn't get the ISO as the icon showed up as holding zero bytes. I guess my understanding of how a torrent works is flawed, as the Azureus link screen seemerd to have nothing to navigate with that I could relate to.

Occasionally some very slow links opening on what is usually a fast connection. Yesterday an empty file suddenly appeared on my desktop after booting up from hibernation, but it may have been a fat-finger mistake that I hadn't been aware of making.

Pages opening slow doesn't necessarily imply something wrong at your machine, however, if you often see all kinds of new files being created on your desktop or any other directory, I'd be very concerned.

Can you describe your internet setup to me? Do you use wi-fi?

Indeed I am concerned. I found 2 unknown .exe files in a user account (my wife's) today and four other unknown files, one with a long string of alphanums for its title but no extension. I intend to back up the users' home directories, some other bits like my bookmarked websites, wipe the disc and re-install Fedora.

Just one ethernet connection direct to the box provided by my ISP - free.fr No wi-fi.

Yes, there's definitely something going wrong. Linux has nothing to do with exe files, and if you and your wife are not downloading them, someone clearly has access to your machine. Either that or you better be careful about the websites you visit. Many sites, through pop-ups, etc, try to trick you into downloading stuff. If you encountered such sites, maybe that can explain the exe files.
